Thank you!

Thank you to all the passionate locals who came to the community meetings of the Waimauku Community Association. Over 200 people attended! Our community is united in standing up against the Waimauku West Fast Track development. This development is simply too large for our township, which already suffers from severe, ongoing flooding and an insufficient roading network. Forcing a fast-tracked development into this environment without addressing our failing infrastructure is a recipe for disaster.

The map below was shown during the community meetings, and the reaction was instant. It shows how large the development (in grey) would be in comparison with the current township (in yellow), and the flooding we already experienced (in blue).

Strength in numbers

There are currently about 500 houses in Waimauku, with approximately 1,400 people. Ideally, we would like everyone to sign up as a member of the Waimauku Community Association. It is free.

That way we can have a strong voice at the table when we get to stage 2 of the Fast Track Process. This development was already signed off by Chris Bishop for stage 1.

Check out our short article about the differences in RMA and Fast-Track and the Fast-Track stages.

What can you do?

If you border this land, or are very close, you can write a submission. However, as a Community Association, we have a stronger voice, especially if we have lots of members. After the latest two community information events, our membership has grown to 360 members, which is fantastic. The more the better!

That is another thing that people can do: Write to Chris Bishop to voice your opposition. Our local MP Chris Penk has provided a statement, but there is a lot more he can do. Write to him too to strongly encourage him to be more proactive in Wellington, to fight for his electorate. Remember: it is election year!

Contact emails and more information is on the Waimauku West project page.

How can you help?

Amongst the founding members are people with years of valuable work experience, which is fantastic. What kind of skills can you offer? Maybe you are really good at writing submissions and can help others. Do you have experience with social media such as Facebook and Instagram. We have a Facebook set up, which already has over 260 followers. Any additional help would be much appreciated.

(On Facebook as: Waimauku Community Association).

Who's with us

We appreciate the support we have received all along from Guy Wishart (Rodney Local Board) and lately from Greg Sayers (Rodney Councillor on the Auckland Council). Both oppose this large development, as does Auckland Council and Auckland Transport.

Once again, thank you for those who attended the community information events. Please spread the word to your family, friends and neighbours. Many hands make light work, and in this case, many members strengthen our community voice.
